The principal of an East Cork secondary school attended by five teenagers injured in a serious car accident said the accident had left “all the families involved and the entire school in shock.”
The principal of Youghal Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide, Séamus O’Ceallacháin, said that “the main concern of the school now is that all the injured make a full recovery.”
He said the school of more than 900 students is “offering all possible support to students and families, whenever possible.”
The three boys and the two girls are between 17 and 18 years old and are fifth and sixth year students at the school.
Two of the male students are twins from the immediate west of Waterford, while the others are from the town of Youghal.
O’Ceallacháin said that everyone was “well known and welcomed in all facets of school life.”
The single-vehicle accident occurred around 9.25pm Thursday, on the R633 Bog Road, a narrow route about 3 km west of Youghal Strand.
The 1km stretch links the main road with a detour to Redbarn Beach, before continuing to the town of Ballymacoda.

I understand the car was heading towards the main road and landed on its roof in a swamp adjacent to the road.A Garda spokesman said the five were taken to Cork University Hospital, where they were “treated for serious injuries.”
It is understood that one occupant was in critical condition.
Gardaí closed the road until Friday morning while a forensic examination was conducted.
It is understood that the road was recently repaved and is not known locally as a particularly dangerous area.
Fianna Fáil Councilor for East Cork, Ann Marie Ahern, said the accident appeared to be “an unfortunate accident.”
“Fortunately there were no fatalities. It is unfortunate that they had to go through what they did last night. We will see what happened, but it appears to be an unfortunate accident,” he said.
