Focus Ireland is asking the people of Cork to participate in a socially distant dream this weekend to raise funds for the homeless.

Big Rebel Sleep Out has been organizing for the past three years in public spaces to raise funds, but with the current situation, the charity has taken a different approach this time.

Participants have been asked to sleep in their gardens or surf the couch for one night to raise funds to help homeless people in Cork City.

Dick White, from Focus Ireland, said the problem of homelessness was still present during the coronavirus crisis.

Speaking to theJournal.ie, White said: “COVID-19 will pass, but it is more difficult than ever to be left homeless.”

White added that the event is “a way to support people who have become homeless.”

money The event has been organized for the past three years.

“It’s for one night, taking you out and making you a little aware of what it might be like to have to sleep on the couch all the time.”

Speaking about the impact of COVID-19, Focus Ireland Regional Manager for the Middle and Southwest Ger Spillane said that homeless people are extremely vulnerable to the virus.

He said: “Not only are homeless people more likely to have underlying health problems, but they cannot follow COVID-19’s most basic recommendations: stay home and maintain a social distance from other people.

“During these difficult times, our work here in Cork continues and we need the support of the people of Cork now more than ever to enable us to continue our services throughout the broader Cork region.

“I am going to do my part by simulating a dream in my own garden at night. It is an awareness-raising exercise on the issue of homelessness and at the same time generate much-needed funds to help us provide our services.”
