Some 70 new and recent cases of the coronavirus in Cork have been linked to pubs and restaurants, Dr. Ronan Glynn said tonight.
This is from a total of around 350 new cases in Leeside in the last fortnight. A decision is expected to be made in a few days on whether Cork and several other counties will move to a higher level.
The linked cases have been confirmed for the past two weeks as restrictions have been relaxed in Cork.
And Acting Medical Director Dr. Glynn said tonight that Cork and Galway are two of the cities where concerns about youth case clusters in particular are generating concern.
Two counties, Dublin and Donegal, are currently at Level 3 in the Living with Covid framework and face stricter Covid-19 measures than the rest of the country.
A decision will be made this week on whether to increase Covid-19 restrictions in Cork, Louth, Wicklow and Galway as health officials seek to “break the loop” in the face of new and localized outbreaks of the virus.
A move to Level 3 is likely to apply to Cork City for the time being only.
The increase in cases among younger people is of particular concern: 66% of currently confirmed cases are in people under 45 years of age.[ikeincasesamongstyoungerpeopleiscausingparticularconcern-66%oftoday’sconfirmedcasesareinpeopleunder45yearsofage[ikeincasesamongstyoungerpeopleiscausingparticularconcern-66%oftoday’sconfirmedcasesareinpeopleunder45yearsofage
Dr. Glynn said that Galway had shown a large group of people associated with younger people.
And 45 of the 390 cases confirmed today were identified as community transmission.
Dr. Glynn said it is too early to say what recommendations will be needed for Halloween or Christmas, but it seems increasingly likely that health officials will appeal to people to limit all interactions in what is traditionally a busy time of socialize around Halloween.
He said that if recommendations are needed, they will be made to protect people from suffering like Jerick and his family.

He said there have been 350 cases in Cork in recent weeks.
In Galway, he said there has been a large group associated with younger people.
