Tributes have been paid to Cork GAA superfan Jonty O’Leary, who sadly passed away.

Jonty supported Cork GAA in all codes and was also a proud man from St Finbarr.

Joe Seward, Life FM sports presenter, wrote the following heartfelt tribute to his friend: “The untimely passing of Jonty O’Leary, one of Cork GAA’s most iconic and colorful supporters, will leave a void in both the GAA terraces at across the country as well as among his fellow rebel gang members with whom he traveled the length and breadth of Ireland supporting Cork in Hurling, Gaelic Football, Camogie and Ladies Football in all grades.

“Jonty played drums and could be seen anywhere from Dungarvan to Donegal cheering on the rebels with his great friends and band colleagues Thomas ‘Bomber’ Roche, Pa ‘The Piper’ O’Leary, Cyril ‘The Bird’ Kavanagh, Ray Lucey, Shane Murphy and Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Burns.

“Jonty attended his first All Ireland in 1956 and was a permanent plate at the Kent station to greet the Cork Cork teams, whether they won or lost. He embodied the essence of loyalty to the rebel cause both in the victory as in defeat.

“I remember walking down Parnell Street from Croke Park and Jonty’s Sombrero was taken over by some undesirables. I managed to get him back and felt how important a symbol of his identity was to him on the terraces and defined who was a rebel for him.” the nucleus.

“It was also a true blue and seeing his beloved Barrs win the County Senior Football Championship in 2018 after a 33-year wait was also a particularly special moment that he appreciated and celebrated as only he could.”

“I traveled in his company many times and these trips to a game turned into a long weekend. Winning, losing or drawing Jonty made sure there were no regrets.”

“Rest in peace Jonty”.
