A district judge said he was very concerned for the safety of a family where a young man is alleged to have pulled out a carving knife and made threats at their home.
Judge Olann Kelleher noted that the case had a domestic history and was concerned for the safety of the family.
Garda detective Liam Lynch arrested the 20-year-old and brought him to the Cork District Court.
It was alleged that the young man pulled out a carving knife and threatened to stab his father with it and set the family home on fire.
Det. Garda Lynch said: “The knife that was allegedly used to make the threat was still in place when we arrived. He (the defendant) was asleep on the couch. “Det. Garda Lynch objected to bail being granted to the young man and said there was a possibility that the defendant interfered with witnesses and that he had an alcohol addiction, which which resulted in poor decision making by the defendant.
During the detective’s cross-examination by defense attorney Frank Buttimer, it emerged that the full scope of the alleged threat was that he allegedly threatened to stab his father in the neck and cut his throat with the carving knife.
The young man said he was crazy at the time. He said he was about to receive treatment for his alcohol problem and would have done so by now had it not been for the Covid-19 restrictions.
He said he wouldn’t drink if they gave him bail.
Judge Olann Kelleher said that although the court was concerned about the case, bail would be granted to the defendant. Conditions require you to sign in every day at Anglesea Garda station, stay away from the family home which is in a suburb of Cork City, stay away from intoxicants, and maintain a curfew to be in an alternate direction every night from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Sgt. Pat Lyons said instructions were expected from the Director of Public Prosecution on the charge of producing a weapon in the course of a dispute. Judge Olann Kelleher adjourned the case until February 11.
