Conor McGregor looks set to resume his UFC career after a boxing clash with Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao next year.
That’s according to 32-year-old manager Audie Attar, who told ESPN that the Dublin fighter plans to return to the UFC octagon in 2021.
McGregor expressed his frustration with the UFC on Twitter yesterday as he tried to explain why he decided to withdraw, sharing screenshots of messages with UFC boss Dana White in the process.
The texts show that White offered McGregor a shot at Justin Gaethje in July before the Covid-19 pandemic took over the world, but McGregor wanted to fight in May.
It also showed that McGregor wanted to face veteran Diego Sánchez in Dublin this year.
In a tweet, McGregor shared the messages that read: “To Diego Sánchez … I saw his recent comments on his final fight and I’m in!
“After you fought Pereira, I asked you and me to compete in Dublin. This was in February when I was working in opposition for my season, pre-covid. Good luck this weekend!”
He continued: “All the water under the bridge anyway who gives a fuck. I’m going to box Manny Pacquiao in the Middle East.”
Pacquiao, 42, who is a senator in his native Philippines, has since confirmed through his spokesman that he will fight McGregor next year.
His team stated that “the details are still being finalized” and also pledged a significant portion of the proceeds from the Pacquiao fight to his country’s pandemic response.
McGregor switched to boxing for a lucrative loss to Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas three years ago.
Last month, he tweeted the word “accepted” in Tagalog, the official language of the Philippines, and generated rumors that he was ready to fight Pacquaio.
The pair have been linked to a clash in recent years, as the former two-weight UFC champion reiterated his desire to give professional boxing another shot.
