Conor McGregor admitted that he “cannot continue” after being arrested for allegedly exposing himself to a young woman in a bar.
Crumlin’s fighter was questioned by police in Calvi last Friday after the alleged incident during a drinking session.
He was released without charge, but could be detained again once the results of other tests are known.
The former UFC champion, who has been training in the region for a 180km water ride, took to Twitter in response to a user who had alerted him to a BBC story calling him “English.”
The user said: “They may have it. The BBC is right, [Conor McGregor] its English.”
The Irishman McGregor replied: “[You work in] suicide intervention still [you are] ridiculing myself in this way online, at this horrendous time in my life.
“I’m trying to stay strong for my children and the people who trust me and who love and support me. Thanks for the insults, hypocrite.
“I can’t go on like this man. I’m crushed here.”
McGregor allegedly exhibited his private parts to a young married woman in the luxurious port city of Calvi on September 6.
The formal accusations were made against McGregor to police last Thursday by an as-yet unidentified whistleblower.
Police raided his yacht the next day, 24 hours before McGregor took part in a 180 km 24-hour charity water bike race from Calvi to Monaco with Princess Charlene.
Emmanuelle Ramon, McGregor’s attorney, said her client “strongly denied any wrongdoing.”
“He has been released before the legal termination of police custody and without any judicial review,” Ramón said.
Audie Attar, McGregor’s manager, said in a statement: “I am furious and issue a strong and clear warning: Conor McGregor is not and will not be a target for those looking to land a starter or payday.”
The Notorious was staying on his yacht with his girlfriend, Dee Devlin, and their two children.
He had been preparing to take part in a 180km 24-hour charity water bike race from Calvi to Monaco.
Princess Charlene reportedly stood by him to help promote safety on the water, but the UFC star has now been forced to retire.
