People can go out for a bite to eat and a drink again starting next week.

The Irish Mirror has confirmed with government sources that restaurants, gastropubs and hotels will be back in business to eat and drink from next Friday.

The massive push for the hotel industry is about to get the green light at a special Cabinet meeting that will take place this afternoon.

A senior source said: “The government has decided to do the right thing.”

He added that businesses will have to “redouble their efforts to keep diners safe” after they are given the opportunity to reopen.

The government’s decision is being made in defiance of NPHET’s advice that calls for the doors of hospitality to remain closed until Christmas.

The Irish Mirror revealed on Wednesday night that Friday, December 4, would be the day when food and drink could be served again in restaurants.

And government ministers have now formally sanctioned the massive reopening of hundreds of restaurants and pubs serving food.

Hotels will also be able to open their doors to non-residents so they can ring the boxes and try to salvage some sales from a disastrous year.

The country will begin to open up significantly starting next Tuesday when the High Street stores reopen their doors.

Gyms, golf clubs, cinemas, museums, galleries and churches may also reopen from next Tuesday.

Tuesday’s reopens will occur one day ahead of schedule and the current lockdown on Level 5 is not formally supposed to end until midnight Tuesday.

The extra day will give a much-needed extra day for businesses to make money in the run-up to Christmas, after a grueling six weeks of Level 5 lockdown.

The Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, will make a formal announcement from the steps of the government buildings at tea time tonight.
