A new roadmap for Darndale revealed today includes plans to advance the small minority of tenants whose antisocial behavior has been dragging down the Coolock property.

The Dublin City Council presented the final Darndale Socio-Economic and Community Plan to city councilors in the north central area of the city this morning.

Residents involved in drug trafficking will be evicted and a confidential local support network related to bullying will be launched under the plan.

Local groups, community activists and volunteers played an important role in shaping the new plan for Darndale, a proud and vibrant community that has been beset by the antisocial actions of a small minority in the Dublin 17 area.

A community policing center has also been designated for the sprawling farm in the far north of the DCC area.

Additionally, the wide-ranging plan promises more support for new moms and turf in the long-awaited second phase of the Darndale Belcamp Village Center.

Former Assistant Garda Commissioner Jack Nolan spent nine months compiling the detailed report, which includes an in-depth analysis of Darndale and the surrounding areas.

The analysis includes a demographic profile, a mapping of existing important community services, an identification of current problems, and a roadmap for solving these problems in the future.

Mr. Nolan said, “Darndale is a proud and vibrant community with a significant infrastructure of existing programs and services.

“Existing programs, such as ‘Prepare for Life,’ which provide comprehensive support to pregnant women before and after delivery, are an example of what should be provided.

“Unfortunately, in recent times there has been an imbalance between positive and negative influences in the community, and negative influences have started to win out.

“The time has come for all stakeholders to take coordinated action to fix these problems and correct the balance.”

Council Deputy Director Brendan Kenny added: “Dublin City Council thanks all stakeholders in the local community for their input to this report.

“We are fully committed to leading the implementation of this report in partnership with statutory, non-statutory, community, and volunteer groups working in the area.

“There are great local people and community workers operating in the area. This is an excellent opportunity to coordinate local services while undertaking some additional projects that will have a transformative effect on the local community.”

Actions include the following:

  • Develop a forum of community representatives
  • Develop a place-based leadership program
  • Enforce lease agreements and relocate tenants who engage in antisocial behavior and drug sales and supply
  • Develop phase 2 of the Darndale Belcamp Village Center to promote positive activity in the local community.
  • Develop tailor-made second-level educational programs to maintain the interest of second-level students.
  • Pilot a childhood adverse experiences program in the area
  • Development of a tailored crime prevention strategy for Darndale, including the establishment of a community policing center
  • Implementation of a restorative practice approach in all schools in the area.
  • Establish a confidential local support network related to drug bullying
  • Disseminate information on the availability of educational programs and opportunities in the area.
  • Designate a general area service manager to coordinate youth collaboration services
  • Develop a drug awareness course for primary and secondary schools in the area.
  • Expand the “Preparing for Life” program to help families with children who go to school
