A 13-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a truck in Cork city center this afternoon.
Gardaí is asking for witnesses after the collision, which occurred on Sheare Street around 3:30 p.m.
The teenager was rushed to nearby Mercy University Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after.
The boy was a freshman at Presentation Brothers College in Mardyke.
It is believed to be from the south of the city, but the Gardaí will not release his name until all family members are notified.
The truck driver was unhurt. The road was closed after the incident and the scene was preserved for a full forensic and technical examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.
Chief Superintendent Barry McPolin has asked anyone with information to contact Gardaí.
“We will call for witnesses to come forward,” he said. “In particular, anyone who was in that area along Mardyke or Sheares Street in a car or as a pedestrian.
“If you have any information, we will ask you to contact us at Anglesea Garda station at 021-4522000. A full investigation is underway. We have a forensic collision investigator who will assist in the investigation and we will also appoint a family liaison officer. ”
Gardaí is attracting any road user who may have camera footage (including dash cam) and traveling in the area between 3:15 pm and 3:45 pm for Gardaí to have access to these images.
Cork City Councilor Des Cahill expressed shock at the tragic incident, which he said had shocked the local community.
“This is really horrible news,” he said. “We are all shocked and saddened. The word fails everyone. Our thoughts are with his family.
“The whole community will join the family.”
