The government has lowered expectations that there will be a relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions for the pub sector in the run-up to Christmas.
The three leaders of the coalition party will meet today as discussions continue on how the country can get out of Level Five in more than a week.
After days of planning behind the scenes, it is now becoming clearer what December will be like, not just starting in the week of Wednesday, when the Level Five restrictions will be eased, but over a two-week period around Christmas, when it is more concessions are likely to be made.
Stores, gyms and hair salons are expected to reopen for most of the month, along with the mass and religious congregation.
Hospitality remains a key stumbling block; Although NPHET is likely to take a cautious approach, some Cabinet members believe that restaurants should be opened for indoor dining and that pubs should be allowed to resume some form of commerce.
However, the latest figures make this prospect less likely. With 318 new cases and one more death of people with Covid-19, the Minister of State, Pippa Hackett, said: “It does not make sense to tell people that we are going to open for two weeks at Christmas because that is free for everyone. “
There will be two more cabinet meetings before an announcement is made on Friday.
