Cork secured promotion to the NFL Division 2 with an emphatic double-digit victory at home against Louth.
Cork, playing in white, attacked City End in the first half, but Louth settled in first, opening the scoring with Sam Mulroy (free) and points from Anthony Williams in the first five minutes.
Paul Walsh opened the Cork account before Colm O’Callaghan accelerated a pass from Paul Kerrigan and scored: 1-1 to 0-2 in eight minutes.
A free long-range Killian O’Hanlon and a shot from Ruairi Deane pushed Cork four ahead as the locals settled in. O’Callaghan added a good solo point before the water break, making it 1-4 at 0-2.
Cork resumed with a well-crafted move, Ian Maguire appeared at the end with a clever move to the net, and the Rebels were in full control. This was underscored in the 21st minute, Cian Kiely set up Paul Kerrigan for Cork’s third goal; O’Hanlon’s one point from kickoff and it went 3-6 to 0-2.
Louth finally had his third point in the 25th minute, from Tommy Durnin, but O’Hanlon responded in kind.
Mulroy had three free hits in a row as Louth recovered, but Kevin O’Donovan and Damien Gore had points from Cork. With halftime closing in on Mulroy (free) and Durnin had points from Louth, but Cork was well up at the break leading 3-9 to 0-8.
O’Hanlon and Gore restarted on points before Ruairi Deane placed Kerrigan close to goal. His shot to the net was great: 4-11 to 0-8, and when Louth defender Fergal Donohoe left with a second yellow in the 41st minute, the game ended as a match.
Substitute Mark Collins found the net for Cork’s fifth goal just before the water break in the 54th minute, while Louth’s Patrick Reilly and Emmet Carolan were sent off before the end.
