RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne show on Radio 1 has signed a new sponsor, just one week after the revamped show began airing.

pel Ireland has confirmed that it will sponsor the show from today after shelling out € 300,000 in sponsorship fees.

There was also the option of a € 165,000 package to run for six months, but the car company has gone for the full-year option, a positive sign for the new show.

The show currently has 321,000 listeners and Claire was considered a safe pair of hands to permanently replace Sean O’Rourke when he retires.

Sarah McInerney proved to be a popular surrogate during the summer months and has now gotten her own space on Drivetime every night.

The new sponsorship agreement consists of six ‘bites’ per day and seven promotions on RTÉ Radio 1’s schedule each week.

The package also includes home page and podcast sponsorship.

Though he’s only been running the mid-morning show for the past week, Byrne is already meeting a favorable reaction from listeners.

The host, who also headlines her own Monday night television show, The Claire Byrne Show, was seen as the obvious choice to replace O’Rourke when she confirmed her retirement on her 65th birthday last May.

Her appointment was confirmed by RTÉ late last month and she said she was looking forward to the new challenge.

“My job will be to represent the voices of the listeners of RTÉ Radio 1, and always ask the questions that they want to be answered at this critical moment.

“I won’t let you down,” he said.

“I can’t wait to get started with the legendary team that works on the show and to help create the informative, entertaining and important Today show that we all know, love and trust in our everyday lives.”
