Ireland’s Retail Minister has issued a promising two-word update for punters as the opening hours are rumored to be longer during the Christmas period.
Minister of State for Employment and Retail Trade Damien English confirmed that it was “the full intention” of the government to open retailers on December 1.
And reports now suggest that stores will be allowed to open as late as they like in the run-up to the holiday period.
It has emerged that the Government is considering plans that will allow trading after normal opening and closing hours with the Minister working with local authorities to get such a plan passed on.
From conversations with retailers, Minister English understands that although they want more hours, they do not want a 24-hour opening system.
Speaking on the RTE news yesterday, he said the country was “moving in the right direction.”

He said, “So the decisions will now be made by all of our government departments – how can we safely reopen.
“We are putting plans in place to reopen safely, to facilitate that important month of December. That is our full intention.”
He added: “We have been working on that all these weeks.”
“We have always said that when the numbers allow and when appropriate, we would reopen.
