A boy who was attacked by his grandmother’s dog when he was playing in her garden settled his lawsuit in the High Court for 80,000 euros.

Eoin Kerrigan, the court heard, was just four years old when the Japanese dog Akita, bought by his grandmother as a guard dog, attacked and bit him. The boy suffered lacerations to his scalp and forehead.

Eoin, now eight, of Millrace Park, Drumlish, Co Longford, through her mother Áine Kerrigan, sued her grandmother, Anna Reilly, of Kilmahon, Drumlish, as a result of the October 2, 2016 incident.

Judge Garrett Simons heard that Eoin and his mother went to lunch Sunday with his grandmother and he was playing with three cousins in their backyard when the incident occurred.

The boy suffered lacerations, was extremely shocked and distraught, and bled profusely. He was treated at the Mullingar Regional Hospital, where it was observed that he had suffered four lacerations, two deep on the scalp about 6 cm long, one on the left side of the forehead and the other above the left eyebrow.

Stitches

He was kept overnight in the hospital and received 26 stitches under general anesthesia.

In an affidavit, her mother said the stitches were removed seven days later and the wounds had healed well. A plastic surgeon said last year that Eoin didn’t need any more treatment for the scars.

The court heard that Eoin suffered flashbacks from the incident, had nightmares about it and developed a fear of dogs for a time.

In approving the settlement, Judge Simons noted that the photographs of the scars showed improvement and said the settlement was very good.
