Chelsea put up an impressive performance in the Champions League to seal a 4-0 win against Krasnodar.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic found the net when the Blues scored their first Group E win in Russia.
However, regular penalty taker Jorginho missed his second penalty shot of the season, misguiding goalkeeper Matvei Safonov with his trademark jumping run, only to brush the ball off the post as he tried to give Chelsea the lead.
Jorginho had just been substituted with 15 minutes to go when Chelsea won a second penalty in the match.
And with the Italian midfielder off the field, German hitman Werner took control and shoved the ball into the net in a style that was in stark contrast to Jorginho’s approach.
Jorginho’s signature technique was unerring for eight straight penalties, but so far this season the 28-year-old has missed twice and scored three from spot.
Werner’s hit on netbusting will have at least boss Frank Lampard to think in terms of a regular penalty taker, and the forward will undoubtedly be willing to take on those roles as often as possible.
Chelsea managed a nice win in any event, with rookie Ziyech looking strong and influential, floating down the right flank with plenty of creative spin.
Hudson-Odoi marked his start with a goal, but was later seen putting ice on his left thigh.
Chelsea’s third clean sheet in a row is another boost for manager Lampard, on a night in which owner Roman Abramovich was present in southern Russia.
Krasnodar made by far the fastest start, Marcus Berg managed a solid save from Edouard Mendy.
Ziyech looked strong in his full debut and got into position for a low drive, but was unable to catch up with Safonov.
Chelsea earned a well-deserved penalty shortly thereafter when Brazilian defender Kaio lost his composure and trapped Werner in his own box.
Jorginho stepped forward and Safonov missed his foot, but rubbed his effort against the post and the bouncing ball bounced off the bewildered Safonov and quickly sped away, leaving Chelsea lamenting a huge missed opportunity.
If Chelsea’s missed penalty had an air of misfortune, their first goal was full of luck.
The elegant accumulation game saw Hudson-Odoi feed into the box by cutting to the left. The England striker braked and fired on target, and what should have been a harmless effort twisted under Safonov’s body and into the net.
Chelsea took that 1-0 lead at halftime, never taking a full step in a troubled first half.
The Blues were unable to take control after the break, and the crossbar soon came to their rescue.
Yuri Gazinski crashed into the grass after a corner and the resulting rebound left Mendy unable to deflect to its full extent, with the ball hitting the wood.
Havertz conjured a good chance for Ziyech at half-time with a handsome ball in the box as Chelsea looked to solidify their lead.
But the enterprising Moroccan winger couldn’t find a shot to match his footwork to open up space for the shot.
Defender Aleksandr Martynovich’s hand gave Chelsea a second penalty in the game with a quarter of an hour to go.
Werner came up, who lunged emphatically to seal the Blues victory and Ziyech added a third moment later, finishing well to cap off a strong full debut as the visitors finally eased his way to victory.
Pulisic added the fourth at the time of death, placing home on the near post, taking advantage of a graceful tee-up from Tammy Abraham.
