Charlie McConalogue has been nominated as the new Minister of Agriculture to replace Dara Calleary, a victim of the golf gate.

McConalogue, 47, is a TD from Donegal and has served as Fianna Fail’s junior minister for legal reform since June.

In announcing his nomination, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that McConalogue has a deep and broad knowledge of his portfolio, which he also oversees Food and Marine.

Martin said he will “face urgent challenges essential to securing the long-term future of rural Ireland.”

Wexford Fianna Fáil TD James Browne has been nominated to succeed him as Minister of State.

McConalogue will be the third Minister of Agriculture in this administration following the firing of Barry Cowen after 17 days and the resignation of Dara Calleary after 37 days.

McConalogue is also a former Fianna Fail agriculture spokesperson.

He also previously held the position of spokesperson for Children, Education and Skills.

He was first elected to the Dail in 2011 for the North East Donegal constituency.
