The signing of Edinson Cavani by Man Utd is too far a “bet” for the club, according to Harry Redknapp.

Edinson Cavani was one of four deadline day signings for Manchester United. The former PSG player signed a two-year contract after his contract with the French giants expired.

Facundo Pellistri arrived from Argentina’s Peñarol for around £ 7 million, while Alex Telles signed from Porto for around £ 15 million.

Man Utd also concluded a deal to sign Atalanta youngster Amad Diallo for a fee of around £ 19 million plus add-ons.

The Red Devils had been linked to a number of players this summer, including Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

Despite this, Man Utd waited until the last day of the window to conclude most of its business.

Cavani has been a prolific scorer across Europe throughout his career. He had more success with Napoli and PSG.

The Uraguay international spent seven years with the French team. In that time, he scored 200 notable goals from his 301 appearances in all competitions.

But the former Tottenham boss has questioned Cavani’s signing. In your column for Sun, Redknapp said:

“I think everyone knows that I like gambling from time to time… but nothing like what Manchester United did when they signed Edinson Cavani.

“But signing Cavani, 33, with more than £ 200,000 a week on the last day of the transfer window seemed desperate to me.

“If it was someone that United liked to sign so much, why did they leave so late?

“Cavani has been a great player over the years and if he is still hungry and talented he will do a good job for them.

“For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sake, I hope it is because they certainly can’t afford more shows like that against Spurs.”
