Johnston believes Cavan is ‘in a good place’

Former Cavan and Kildare forward Seanie Johnston believes Breffni’s men are “in a good place” ahead of their Irish semi-final clash with Dublin.

Due to the pandemic, Cavan’s team was unable to celebrate their Ulster Championship victory in the same way they did in 1997, but Johnston believes that could have helped them focus more on tonight’s game.

He told RTE’s Game: “I spoke with a member of Cavan’s management team. So the last time we won Ulster was in 1997 and the place went crazy and the whole place was crazy.

“Obviously the pubs and they were all open [in 1997] and it was crazy at the time. But in terms of Cavan now, they haven’t really been able to celebrate. He has not been crazy.

“The players went back to work probably on Monday and trained on Tuesday, Wednesday in the gym and then Thursday and Saturday.

“They came back to reality very quickly so they will enter this Irish semi-final without an incredible amount of hype.

“Everyone is very excited and slaps them on the back and so forth, but there have been no mass celebrations. They haven’t been dragged through the county here, there and everywhere from Shannon Wales to Kingscourt and up and down the county.

“They have been able to focus for the last 13 or 14 days for this game and they are going to need all that focus and we have no illusions. But I think they are in a good place. ”
