Cash seized in Kinahan crime gang raids should be reinvested in drug, youth and community projects, says Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond

The money seized in the Kinahan gang raids should be returned to deprived areas to “target crime at its source”.

That’s the view of Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond, who said today that he wants the proceeds of crime to go immediately to the community, youth and drug services.

Gardai has seized € 16 million in cash from criminal gangs this year, a much higher figure than in previous years, with € 7.44 million seized in 2019 and € 7.19 million in 2018, and does not include articles of luxury such as jewelry, artwork. and expensive cars and bicycles to be auctioned.

And Congressman Richmond wants to see the money “put to work” rather than get lost in “the black treasure hole.”

The Dublin-Rathdown TD said: “We are seeing great success in taking the profits from crime, but we need to see these profits reinvested in early intervention services, youth distraction programs, community policing and addiction services to attack crime in its origin.

“Having exchanged a series of parliamentary questions and letters with both the Minister of Public Expenditure and the Minister of Justice, I would once again ask the Minister of Public Expenditure to protect the seized funds.

“The money is there, they have seized it, let’s put it to work.

“Instead of allowing the funds to disappear into the black hole of the treasury, we are going to hedge it now and invest those 16 million euros in a series of three-year programs in the areas that need it most.

“16 million euros could cover the cost of many resource workers, addiction counselors or training programs.

“There would be nothing more appropriate than ruining criminals like the Kinahan gang and using that money to fund anti-crime measures.”
