Jamie Carragher says Chelsea “don’t have a chance” to win the Premier League, unless they hire a new goalkeeper.
The Blues have spent a lot this summer on players like Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, but have yet to sign an update on Kepa Arrizabalaga, who endured a torrid season last season.
Edouard Mendy is believed to be close to moving, and Carragher insists a new goalkeeper is a must if Frank Lampard’s team is to have any chance of closing the gap with Liverpool.
The winners and losers of the Premier League are back …
“Their spending has been on the upper end of the field and until they rectify the goalkeeper situation, I don’t think Chelsea has any chance of winning the Premier League,” he told MNF in Sky sports.
“You just have to look at Pep Guardiola’s first season in England, Jurgen Klopp’s first 18 months, until he signs the goalkeepers.
“They make a real difference. If Chelsea sign a great goalkeeper, I think it will make a big difference.
“Also, to be fair to Chelsea and Frank, the spending this summer is almost three or four money transfer windows that are spent at once in some way.
“They couldn’t sign any player last season, they still have Hazard’s money and Morata’s money.
“The things they are talking about, how much they have actually spent, is club money in a way, but until they change the ‘goalkeeper, they won’t have a chance.”
