Jamie Carragher says he disagrees with Jurgen Klopp “sacrificing great opportunities” by playing a high line.

Liverpool was caught again and again while suffering a shock Defeat Aston Villa 7-2 on Sunday.

Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick when Aston Villa smashed the Reds at Villa Park, and Carragher believes his attempts to catch opposition players offside high up on the field have become his biggest weakness.

Talking to Sky sportsCarragher said: “No. Not really [can’t explain it]. I was almost laughing. I could not believe what I was seeing.

“You really don’t associate this with this Liverpool team. It is an impressive result and performance. Certainly the worst under Jurgen Klopp, hands down.

“It seemed very early that Liverpool did not start this game well. In the opening minutes there was danger for them and it was interesting to hear Ollie Watkins say they were working on the Liverpool top line.

“For me, even though Liverpool have a good defensive record, I don’t like them trying to catch teams offside. I do not agree with that. Being a defender and having played in that position, this team plays much higher up the field. They almost sacrifice a great opportunity per game with the opponent going on goal.

Klopp: Liverpool ‘lost the plot’ in ‘game that shouldn’t happen’

“When someone hits your press in midfield and it’s not far from your back four, you have to prepare to come back.

“And I couldn’t believe Virgil van Dijk in the back was really saying ‘listen guys it’s game over, it’s 5-2, let’s take a step back. Let’s not make this worse. ‘ And it got worse.

“They were lucky it wasn’t eight or nine. You think about the opportunities Barkley had in the first half, Ollie Watkins hit the bar in the second half.

Listen, you can’t be too critical of what this team has done and with Jurgen Klopp, it was one of those crazy results that happened.

“But I think one goes back to the first game: conceding goals. I started conceding goals on the restart at the end of last season; We attribute it to the fact that we have already won the championship, so I think we will return to the Merseyside Derby in the coming weeks.

“Great game, Everton is the best in the league and I think you can really look at that and wonder if it’s a strange trend or more that has been happening in the last 10-15 games.”
