CAO Points for Entry to Most College Courses Have Increased Significantly This Year, New Figures Show

At the college level, many have seen average point increases of between 20 and 30 points in a wide range of courses.
Additionally, several college courses have risen above the previous high of 600 points.
They include two at UCD – economics and finance (613, up to 12 points) and actuarial and financial studies (601, up to 24 points) – and four at Trinity College Dublin (management science and information systems studies (613, +24 points); dentistry science (613, +23 points); law and business (602, +26 points) and law and political science (602, +35 points).
In total, it is understood that about 78 percent of college applicants have received an offer from one of their top three options this year at honors degree or level eight. This is a similar ratio to last year.
This rises to about 98 percent for applicants seeking one of the top three options in a regular degree / advanced diploma, or at level six / seven.
Most higher education figures say the point increases are larger than expected, despite the government’s frantic efforts to ease upward pressure by creating thousands of additional third-tier places.
However, government figures say the point increases would have been even higher if not for a last-minute move to create more than 2,000 additional third-tier spots created in recent weeks.
In total, as a result, there are 12% more places this year compared to last.
Higher Education Minister Simon Harris said these additional places mean that significantly more applicants have received offers of places at this stage this year and that more students will be admitted to the university in the coming weeks than in any previous year. .
“I recognize the strong competition for venues this year. I have worked with the sector to increase places as much as possible. I welcome the fact that the proportion of applicants who receive an offer from one of their top three preferences remains stable from year to year, despite this strong competition, ”he said.
All CAO applicants can check if they have received an offer by logging into their account using the ‘My Application’ feature at www.cao.ie from 2pm.
Successful applicants will also receive an offer notification via email and a text message if they have selected this option on their application form. Offers must be accepted by 3pm on Wednesday, September 16.
At Trinity, about 80 percent of the fields saw a point increase, with an average increase of 27 points.
The biggest leap was theater and theater studies (564, +69), a course that was in the center of media attention due to the number of actors who appeared on the television series Normal People.
At UCD, points increased across the board except for the arts.
The largest increases were for midwifery (480, +80), social policy and sociology (378, +58), and physiotherapy (578, + 56).
