Callum Robinson shares the vile abuse he received after Chelsea win

Today should have been a fantastic day for Callum Robinson.

Not having participated in West Brom for the past few months, the Ireland international achieved an impressive double this afternoon as his side achieved a massive victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old was understandably on cloud nine after the final whistle, receiving many congratulations from his teammates for his contribution to securing the result.

However, he was soon faced with what is becoming an increasingly worrying topic in modern football.

After using Instagram to share a post-game celebration post, Robinson was soon bombarded with comments from an account repeatedly using a monkey emoji. The player would share the comments on his own story shortly after.

Unfortunately, incidents like this are becoming more and more common. It seems that barely a week goes by without a professional soccer player exposing some kind of similar abuse.

While police investigations are often carried out, many have called for social media sites to do more to stop this type of behavior.

Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry recently deleted his own social media accounts, saying that he would not return to the platforms until more was done to address this issue.

Other players from Ireland have been in similar situations in recent weeks. Under-21 international Jonathan Afolabi was subjected to vile abuse after a Dundee match in January, while Shane Duffy has also received some shocking messages.

Clearly, something must be done to curb this growing problem.
