Some companies will close as of 3:00 pm when more restrictions take effect in an effort to stem the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Health authorities say they are very concerned about the rapid increase in cases at all ages and are concerned about the increase in the number of people admitted to the hospital.
Gastronomic restaurants and bars must be closed to eat inside and may only offer takeout and delivery.
They will also have to close hair salons, nail bars, cinemas, galleries and museums.
The National Public Health Emergency Team recommended the measure after worrying about the rapidly increasing number of new cases.
Initial tests found evidence that the most transmissible British variant of Covid-19 could have been in Ireland for at least two weeks.
But NPHET said the increase in cases is more likely related to the reopening of the hospitality industry, allowing more people to gather indoors earlier in the month.
NPHET believes that even the severe measures that go into effect today and right after Christmas will not be enough to reduce the number of breeding to the minimum necessary.
He has made more recommendations to the government, including closing non-essential retail stores starting on St. Stephen’s Day.

Professor Philip Nolan said that he does not believe that the measures introduced from today are sufficient to control the virus and this time it comes “very fast and very hard” and the next few days will determine what happens in January.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, he urged people to keep numbers to a minimum and not spend too much time together as these are long meetings indoors where you lose control of the virus.
Professor Nolan said that if people have been out a lot lately, they should stay away from loved ones who may be vulnerable.
