Michael McGrath has increased the children’s allowance by € 5 a week for over 12s and € 2 a week for under 12s.
Mr. McGrath, as Minister of Public Expenditure, is basically the man in charge of government finances.
And it has just announced the approval of a series of welcome aid to be paid in Social Protection benefits.
They include:
- Subsidy to live only from € 5 to € 19 a week
- The fuel allowance increases by € 3.50 per week to € 28 per week, a significant help for retirees
- Allowance for children up to € 5 and € 2 for over 12 and under 12 respectively
- The support subsidy for caregivers increases by € 150 per year to € 1,850
- Three-week extension of parental benefits
- New scheme to allow PUP recipients to do some work without seeing PUP hacked
- The pension continues for all 66-year-olds – it was supposed to increase to 67 on January 1
Meanwhile, the price of cigarettes will also increase by 50 cents, raising the total cost of a pack from € 20 to € 14.
But companies that have been forced to close temporarily due to government restrictions will be able to receive up to € 5,000 per week.

And VAT for restaurants and the hospitality sector, which was raised controversially last year, will be lowered from 13.5% to 9% from November 1 to the end of 2021.
The new business scheme aims to support those who were forced to shut down temporarily during the pandemic as a result of the restrictions.
This mainly affects the entertainment sector, and includes bars and restaurants.
The government will make the payment based on the average weekly turnover of a company in 2019, up to a maximum of € 5,000.
