British police confirmed an incident aboard a ship off the Isle of Wight following reports of an attempted hijacking of a tanker.

The incident is reported to have taken place aboard the Libyan-registered crude oil tanker Nave Andromeda south of Sandown, according to Isle of Wight Radio.

A spokesman for the Hampshire Police said: “We are aware of and are dealing with an ongoing incident aboard a ship off the south of the Isle of Wight.

“We will provide you with further updates when we are in a position to do so.”

A spokeswoman for Associated British Ports (ABP), which manages the port of Southampton, said they had not had any contact with the vessel and had no further comment.

Sky News reported that the vessel was the ‘Nave Andromeda’ tanker and that the incident involved a small number of stowaways.

However, the police have not confirmed those reports.

Refinitiv ship tracking data showed that the Andromeda Ship was expected to arrive in the English port of Southampton at 10:30 a.m.

The ship had sailed from Lagos in Nigeria, the data showed.
