Niall Breslin, better known as Bressie, has responded to rumors that he and Tanaiste Leo Varadkar share a romantic history.
The Mullingar-born musician gave a wry answer to those who have speculated that he once dated the Fine Gael frontman.
Talking about the last episode of his Where is my head podcast, Bressie sarcastically confided to her listeners, saying, “I think it would be fair to say during the last few seasons of this podcast, that we have to get to know each other pretty well.”
The 39-year-old continued to joke that he was romantically involved with the Tanaiste “for several years.”
Bressie joked: “Leo was my intermittent partner for almost three years and despite our differences, we are still friends.”
Bressie went on to sarcastically claim that political differences affected the bond shared by the couple: “ Sometimes, we really wrestled with each other’s politics, which in the end, was a bridge that we just couldn’t cross.
But here’s the thing: Due to our respective jobs and profiles, we had to keep our relationship a secret. It was the best.
‘So secret, in fact, that we didn’t even know it.’
Bressie went on to say that her friend Natalie “had to tell me over a glass of wine.”
The former rugby player continued: ‘It’s what we call a rumor, and a very good one.
‘Let’s face it, rumors are ingrained in the very fabric of society and they certainly add a bit of excitement to our lives. Life would be incredibly boring if it were full of facts and evidence.
‘Generally, rumors are just a bit of nonsense. Harmless enough, and a little bit funny at times. Like the love story between me and the country’s leader.
However, Bressie warned: ‘But in some cases, rumors can have seriously sinister results. People can lose jobs, relationships, livelihoods, reputations, integrity and, sadly, in some cases, their lives.
The remainder of the podcast episode was devoted to a discussion of the rumors and their broadcast, with the participation of Dr. Ciaran Dunne of the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at DCU, among other guests.
