Wayne Rooney says football should not tolerate “senseless and shameful behavior” from fans who boo with anti-racist gestures.
Supporters returned to Millwall on Saturday for the first time since February 29, with London at level two of the current coronavirus restriction system, but it was the actions of some spectators that took center stage before the 3 p.m. : 00 hrs. Rams.
Some of the 2,000 home fans booed as players on both sides knelt before kick-off and, in a statement on Twitter, Rams interim manager Rooney said: “I witnessed shameful and senseless behavior yesterday. a large part of the Millwall supporters in the stadium.
“We were aware of the possibility of a disruptive response during the knee grab in support of (Black Lives Matter) but nothing prepared us for what we heard.”

“It is really important that the vast majority of us show mutual respect and support and do not tolerate or accept the actions of a foolish few.”
Colchester fans also booed as the players knelt before their game against Grimsby later on Saturday.
A statement from Millwall on Sunday morning read: “Millwall Football Club was shocked and saddened by the events that marred Saturday’s game against Derby County.
“The club has worked tirelessly in recent months to prepare for the return of the fans and what should have been a positive and exciting occasion was completely overshadowed, much to the disappointment and chagrin of those who have contributed to those efforts.
“The club will not allow their good work to go in vain. Players continue to use the largest platform they have to support the momentum for change, not just in football but in society at large.”
A statement from Colchester read: “Colchester United fully supports each and every one of our players and staff who oppose any form of discrimination.
“We also condemn the behavior of any supporter who actively expresses opposition to such activities.”
Callum Harriott, who scored the US winner, called the boo “ridiculous” on Twitter.
