Former US President Barack Obama was one of many politicians and world leaders who congratulated Joe Biden on winning the US presidential election.

Obama said he “could not be more proud” to congratulate Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, saying, “We are fortunate that Joe has what it takes to be president and he already behaves that way.

“Because when you enter the White House in January, you will face a series of extraordinary challenges that no incoming president has ever faced: a raging pandemic, an uneven economy and justice system, a democracy at risk, and a climate at risk.

“I know you will get the job done with the best interests of all Americans in mind, whether or not you have your vote,” Obama said of his former vice president.

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton praised Biden and Harris as “a ticket that makes history, a repudiation of Trump and a new page for America.”

Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, posted: “America has spoken and democracy has won. “We now have a president-elect and a vice-president-elect who will serve us all and unite us all.”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, tweeted: “We keep the republic! Congratulations to Joe Biden on his victory for the soul of our country.
