Rob Kearney has revealed his unorthodox training techniques while completing his two-week quarantine period after arriving in Australia.
Having arrived in Brisbane last month and quarantined in a hotel for two weeks, Kearney only met his new Perth-based Western Force teammates on Tuesday.
Kearney reportedly pressed on his hotel bed bench in the absence of proper fitness equipment, before his former teammate Ben Te’o put something more functional aside.
“It wasn’t heavy enough,” Kearney said.
“I think I have lost a kilogram or two after quarantine for a few weeks. So I will ask the children to put on more weight.”
“When you are forced to adjust, you can do sessions pretty quickly and be amazed at how much work you can do in a small room.
“I had a good friend that I used to play rugby with, Ben Te’o. He’s with the Broncos right now and he left me some gear, a rower and TherraBands.”
Kearney hopes to bring his winning mentality to the team during his one-year stint with the Perth-based Australian team.
The former Ireland international joined the Western Force in September after 15 seasons with Leinster, during which he won four European Champions Cups, one Challenge Cup and six Pro14 titles.
With 95 caps for his national team, the 34-year-old Kearney was part of the winning Six Nations teams of 2009, 2014, 2015 and 2018.

“I am very lucky to have come from some teams and some cultures where we have won a lot of trophies and silverware,” Kearney told the Australian Associated Press.
“Hopefully I can incorporate some of that winning mentality and what it takes to be a high performing team.”
Western Force welcomes the defending champions ACT Brumbies in their first match of the AU Super Rugby season on February 19.
