Locals in North Belfast were said to have been shocked by the death of a North Belfast man and the hospitalization of two friends who were on holiday in Turkey after they fell ill.
One of the three friends died on Saturday, while the other two are in intensive care at the hospital. They were on vacation in the resort town of Bodrum.
All three men are believed to be in their 20s and 30s.
Two of the men were traveling with an Irish passport, while the third used a British passport.
John Finucane, MP from Belfast North, said he knew one of the men personally and that it was an “absolutely heartbreaking” tragedy that affected “three healthy and fit young men.”
Finucane said members of one of the families were flying from Liverpool to Turkey to be with their relative, while arrangements were made for the deceased’s return.
“It has really impacted the community. It gives you an idea of that on social media. Everyone’s thoughts are with the families at this stage, ”he said.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Relations said: “We are aware of the case and we are providing consular assistance.”
Finucane said he had spoken with department officials in Dublin and Turkey and that they are “providing all the consular assistance that one would expect.” “It’s just a tragedy now that a family is going to have to make plans to bring their son home to bury her,” she said.
“It’s just a very common set of circumstances. It is absolutely heartbreaking and while it is a tragedy for a family, we hope the other two boys will come through. “
Belfast’s Deputy Mayor, SDLP Councilor Paul McCusker, said on Twitter that it was “disturbing and devastating news from Turkey about three North Belfast men.”
