Beaumont Hospital treats as many COVID-19 cases

Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital is officially treating the largest number of coronavirus patients in the country, according to recent HSE figures.

While Ireland’s acute hospitals treat 881 positive coronavirus cases and another 449 suspected cases, Beaumont Hosptial is treating 137 of those diagnosed with the virus.

Meanwhile, Mater Hospital is treating the second-highest number of cases, with a total of 85 patients with COVID-19, followed by St. James Hospital with 81 and Tallaght University Hospital with 75.

Overall, hospitals in Dublin are treating the highest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, where over half of the total number of cases in Ireland have been reported.

Outside the capital, the hospital that treats the largest number of patients with coronavirus is the Letterkenny hospital in Donegal with 37 confirmed cases.

In total, the Republic of Ireland has recorded 12,547 cases of COVID-19 and 444 deaths as a result of the virus.

The number of critical care COVID-19 patients has gradually increased from 80 in March to a peak of 160 on April 9.

As of Wednesday night, there were a total of 142 patients in critical care beds across the state. According to the HSE, 108 of the registrants were hooked up to ventilators to help breathe.

As the number of nursing home cases of COVID-19 continues to rise with staffing problems, infectious disease professor Jack Lambert has said the spread is “a fledgling catastrophe.”
