Austria has found 96 foreigners, including British, in one of the major ski resorts who violate travel and confinement rules.

People from all over Europe met in St Anton am Arlberg.

The local mayor has said that dozens of young tourists came to the city, circumventing lockdown rules according to which ski lifts are open but hotels are closed to tourists.

A statement from the Western Tyrol Province Police Force said: “Among others, the British, Danes, Swedes, Romanians, Germans, Australians, Irish and Poles were searched and fined.”

About 15 police officers took part in the checks and the fines amount to £ 2,000.

Austria entered its third national lockdown on December 26, with stricter border measures requiring arrivals to be quarantined. These restrictions were largely introduced to discourage people from entering Austria to ski.

The hotels are now only open to business travelers, but St. Anton’s Mayor Helmut Mall said some newcomers have registered a local business address saying they are looking for work, even though there are no jobs available.
