ASTI has said that it will re-enter discussions with the Department of Education about the assessment for this year’s Final Certificate.
The union withdrew from the talks on Thursday citing its dissatisfaction with the direction the talks had taken.
In a statement, the union said that following an unequivocal statement of commitment from the Minister of Education to take the Leaving Certificate exams this year, it believes that doubts about the staging of additional component elements of this year’s exams have been substantially relieved.
He said he had also ensured that teachers will not be required to provide a list that ranks their students in order of merit, as they did last year.
The ASTI said that in its engagements with the Minister of Education and her officials since her retirement, it expressed concern about the staging of additional component elements of this year’s exams, such as coursework, oral and practical exams, and the consequent relegation of the Leaving the Certificate to a secondary position.
The union said it also raised the issue of the lack of data available in many schools to base and report on the parallel / corresponding measure that the minister is trying to implement alongside the Bachelor Certificate.
He said the minister is committed to working with stakeholders to strengthen the position in this regard.
He said: “Additionally, ASTI has ensured that the requirement for teachers to list their students in order of merit, as they did last year, will not feature in any corresponding / parallel measure that can be implemented this year. “
The unions said on the basis of all this that they would now re-enter the process of bilateral discussions.
“We will continue to engage constructively to ensure we find ways to make it easier for this year’s Leaving Certificate students to move on with their lives,” he concluded.
