ASTI accepts Leaving Cert grade plan but has ‘concerns’

The Irish Teachers Association for Secondary Education joins the Irish Teachers Union to support the predictive grading system, which will replace this year’s Leaving Cert, but says it has big concerns.

The union recommends that its members participate with the scores calculated for the students, but it still has doubts about possible legal problems.

It is after ASTI had long conversations on the subject last night.

But Secretary General Kieran Christie says predictive ratings are not an ideal replacement.

He said: “This is a less than perfect system.

“We are very anxious and afraid to participate in it, but for better or for worse, we have decided to do it.

“What we are saying is that it is now there and we are going to commit ourselves to that, we will insist that it be operated at the highest possible level.”

ASTI said it wants students to advance to the next stage of their lives, so it is recommending that its members commit to the grades calculated for the exit certificate process.

It is after the government decided to suspend this year’s written exams and replace them with calculated grades.

ASTI said it has a long-standing policy that teachers do not evaluate their students for the purpose of obtaining State Certification.

However, he says that in the context of the current global pandemic, he recognizes that this year it is necessary to participate in this new process.

The union said it has a number of major concerns with the process, which is asking the Minister of Education and Skills to urgently address it.

These include the termination by the Minister of his previous decision to grant students 100% of the oral exams and certain practical exams that were due to take place earlier this year.
