Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
(Arsenal win 5-4 on penalties)
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sent Arsenal to their second win of the month at Wembley when Mikel Arteta’s team beat Liverpool on penalties to lift the Community Shield.
August began with the Gabon forward inspiring the Gunners to a record 14th FA Cup win and ended with a morale-boosting victory at the opening of the 2020-21 season.
Aubameyang saw his excellent curling effort canceled by Liverpool substitute Takumi Minamino when the match ended 1-1.
But the Arsenal captain would seal another win by scoring the winning penalty on the next penalty shoot-out.
Rhian Brewster, who came in just before the penalty shootout, missed the only shot from vantage point when the Gunners won 5-4 on an afternoon that only underscored the need to get their stellar shift deal on the line.
Aubameyang gave Arteta’s men the lead by ending a good team move in style and celebrating with the ‘Wakanda Forever’ salute in tribute to Chadwick Boseman following the Black Panther actor’s death.
Arsenal dug deep after the opener, but their resolve was broken in the 72nd minute when Minamino scored his first goal for the club.
The game went to penalties and the Arsenal players claimed their second trophy with Arteta, with Aubameyang coldly sealing the success from the penalty spot.
