The head of the Catholic Church in Ireland is expressing shock over what he says is a “blasphemous” satirical clip aired on RTE’s end-of-year countdown program, which he said was mocking and deeply offensive to Christians.

In two tweets tonight, Archbishop Eamon Martin called for it to be “immediately” removed from the national broadcaster’s online player.

He said the mock news clip, featuring former news anchor Aengus Mac Grianna and accusing God of rape, should be reported.

“Broadcasting such a deeply offensive clip about God and Our Blessed Mother during the Christmas season on RTE and on the eve of the Solemn Feast of Mary, Mother of God, is an insult to all Catholics and Christians,” said Dr. Martin .

“I’m surprised that the producer / editor of ‘NYE Countdown Show’ … didn’t realize how deeply offensive a mocking ‘news report’ was that accused God of raping and exposing his imprisonment. This outrageous clip should be eliminated immediately and denounced by all of good will “.

His condemnation was shared by Fianna Fáil Councilor Micheál Sheehan of Wexford, who said he has filed a complaint with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).

He described the mock ‘Waterford Whispers’ news story as “disgusting and in bad taste” and said an apology was needed.

Independent.ie has asked RTE for a response.

On the show, the former RTE announcer reported that “God became the latest figure to be implicated in the ongoing sexual harassment scandals.” He went on to detail the alleged crimes, which made reference to the Immaculate Conception.

Archbishop Martin’s tweets drew widespread support for his comments and criticism of RTE.

The New Years Eve program was hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Deirdre O ‘Kane.
