Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has defended his decision to team up with Andy Carroll alongside new signing Callum Wilson in the attack on West Ham on Saturday.

Wilson, a £ 20 million signing from Bournemouth, scored the Magpies’ first goal of the 2-0 win at London Stadium in their first Premier League game of the season.

Carroll has yet to score in 22 appearances since returning to his hometown club of the Hammers last summer, but Bruce praised the 31-year-old’s fitness level and insisted he deserved his spot in the starting lineup.

“Andy hasn’t missed a day of training, not a minute, since we came back from the confinement,” Bruce said before Newcastle’s Carabao Cup second round match at home to Blackburn on Tuesday.

“As soon as he walked through the door again, we thought, ‘he looks slim and fit,’ and keeping him in shape, that’s the key.

“He scored a couple of times in preseason, he did everything we asked of him, so he deserved his chance.

“We just had him, to be fair, up front and he took his chance, and I think he deserved to play. Then obviously with the arrival of Callum, I just know that I’m a former center that playing against those two is going to be difficult. “.

Despite getting off to a positive start, with Wilson’s rookie teammate Jeff Hendrick also scoring and left back Jamal Lewis impressing, Bruce is understandably willing not to get carried away by a result.

“There is nothing better for anyone than to leave home and win, especially in the Premier League because we know how difficult it is,” he added.

“But it wasn’t just the victory that I liked, it was the way we did it too, with three new faces in the team that seemed to have been here for years, it doesn’t matter a week, so I liked that.”

“All three of them had a wonderful debut, which also helps the situation.

“We have had a decent start, but we are not going to get carried away by a result because there is still a long, very long way to go.”

Newcastle 2020/21: The season of change?

Before the new season, we take a look at Newcastle’s strengths and weaknesses and what the goals should be for Steve Bruce’s side …

As for the Carabao Cup tie against Blackburn, Bruce confirmed that another summer signing, Ryan Fraser, will start at St James’ Park, and Ciaran Clark will also participate after a long season with an ankle injury.

Bruce said: “Ryan Fraser will be making his debut. Ciaran Clark will be playing who hasn’t played in a long time and there are some players who need a game, but the team is big enough to make those changes and hopefully we can get to the next round.

“We will take it seriously, but this year’s competition is condensed into seven weeks, so we will play more games. I have a squad and I will make changes, but when I look at the strength we have, I still hope that we will try and go through.”

The winners will play out of Morecambe or Oldham in the third round of the competition.
