Andre Wright steals points from Bohs at Showgrounds

Five points now separate Shamrock Rovers and the chasing group at the top of the Premier Division table after the Bohemians finally managed to overtake Sligo Rovers at Showgrounds.

Andre Wright’s goal with ten minutes remaining was enough to seal the victory for a hard-working Bohs team that inflicted on Bit O’Red, their first league loss in six games.

Seeking to narrow that gap between them and the league leaders, it was the visitors who dictated much of the game in the first half and who designed the first chances.

Rovers goalkeeper Ed McGinty was called into action five minutes later when Lewis Banks poorly controlled his punt attempt at the edge of the Sligo area. Possession fell to ex-Sligo winger Kris Twardek, who picked the Dawson Devoy he was expecting, who was in turn turned down by the expanding Scotsman.

Devoy was offered another opportunity to open the score just 60 seconds later. But the ex-Home Farm youth could only drive away from 15 meters.

The Rovers then had to rely on the acrobatics of Kyle McFadden, whose aerial kick prevented the ball from going over the line after a Bohs player threw a Twardek cross into goal.

The home team, looking to continue their impressive post blocking status, conjured their first chance in the 17th minute. Will Seymore could have done better when he headed David Cawley’s corner past James Talbot’s post.

Phibsboro’s men had their chances again before the break. Danny Grant’s effort veered in Wright’s way, but the forward couldn’t put the finishing touch with the goal at his mercy.

While McFadden was involved in front of his own posts again at 37 when he blocked Grant’s well-hit volley.

Both teams started the second period with head chances. Ronan Coughlan first for Sligo, while Wright de Bohs was next to miss the mark after he encountered Anto Breslin’s hanging ball from the left.

Good work from Seymore and Junior provided Coughlan with the next Sligo start with just over an hour to go.

The sparse Showgrounds crowd rose to their feet in anticipation when Coughlan came face to face with Talbot. But Coughlan’s poor finish was his undoing as he shot wide with only Bohs net keeper to win.

McGinty was asked to put both hands behind Wright’s opportunistic shot into the corner with a quarter of an hour to go as Sligo continued to frustrate his opponents.

Dubliners finally broke the stalemate in the 80s when Wright was allowed ample space to connect with Devoy’s cross. The 23-year-old shooter hit the ball past McGinty for his fourth goal of the season.

There was a late opportunity for Sligo, but Coughlan’s missed shot overcame Seymore’s knockdown from a Cawley corner.
