Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has suggested that the injury that forced Seamus Coleman to retire against Brighton on Saturday is “minor”.
The winger left the pitch in the second half with what appeared to be a hamstring problem, just days before the Republic of Ireland take on Slovakia in a crucial semi-final of the Eurocup play-offs 2020 next Thursday.
But speaking during Everton’s press conference following the impressive 4-2 win over the Seagulls that pushed the Toffees to the top of the Premier League table for at least 24 hours, Ancelotti addressed concerns about the injuries of Coleman and Brazilian forward Richarlison.
“Small injury, I think, Coleman. Richarlison had the same problem he had against West Ham in the [Carabao] Cup, “he said.
“So we have 15 days to get them back and I think we can do it.
The former manager of Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid also struggled not to get carried away by Everton’s best start to the season since 1894-95 after four wins out of four in the league and more wins in the Carabao Cup.
“We are very happy for the beginning, we did very well this period, winning matches, showing good quality, the spirit is good,” said Ancelotti.
“But it is only the beginning of the season. Now there is the international break and we can rest. It was a very busy moment and we have to return with the same spirit and attitude.
“In general, the attacking football was good, we had opportunities and we were very clinical in the set pieces, very good in the counterattack, we played a complete game.
“When we defended with the low block we were in a good position, we defended well and that’s why I’m happy.”
Despite Ancelotti’s satisfaction with his defensive performance, questions continue to be asked of England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after his mistake allowed Neal Maupay to draw briefly.
But just a week after giving the English international a vote of confidence, insisting he was not looking to strengthen that area, the Italian was in no mood to talk about the 26-year-old, who has now made more mistakes (nine) leading to goals. than any other player since the start of the 2018-19 season.
“He made a mistake but nothing happened, we have three more points and this is the most important part,” added Ancelotti.
“This is not the right place to talk about Pickford, if I have to say something to him when he comes back (from international service) I will talk to him.”
