A woman has been charged in connection with the circulation of photos and information on social media that allegedly identified a teenager who was found guilty of the murder of Ana Kriegel.
She will be the first person to face the Gardai prosecution following her investigation into the sharing of images and details despite a court order being issued to prevent the 14-year-old boys from being named.
Ana’s body was discovered in the abandoned building in Lucan, West Dublin, on May 17, 2018; the 14-year-old girl had been brutally attacked and sexually assaulted.
Two teenagers, identified in court only as Child A and Child B, were convicted of her murder in June last year.
A Garda spokesperson said: “A woman is expected to appear before a Waterford District Court session in connection with an ongoing Garda investigation into the circulation of images and details on social media claiming to identify an adolescent. that he was found guilty of the murder of Ana Kriégel.
“An investigation was launched when images and details were released online despite a court order preventing the 14-year-olds from being named.
He added: “A provision of the Children’s Law that prohibits the identification of minors accused or convicted of a crime.
He continued: “This is the first person to be prosecuted following a lengthy Garda investigation led by the Gardaí based in the Dublin region.”
Child A received a life sentence for murdering the schoolgirl, which can be reviewed after 12 years; this brings its earliest possible release date to June 18, 2031.
Child B was sentenced to 15 years, which can be reviewed after eight years, and the earliest he can get out of jail is June 18, 2027.
Boy B filed an appeal against his conviction in March of this year.
Both terms were retroactive to the time of his conviction.
The couple, who were 13 at the time of the murder that shocked Ireland, are the youngest people in the state’s history to be convicted of murder.
Child A was also found guilty of aggravated sexual assault on 14-year-old Ana, whose body was found in an abandoned house in Lucan, Co Dublin, in May last year.
