Amazon Warns Irish Shoppers Of Possible New Charges After Brexit

Amazon is warning its Irish customers using its UK website of possible new charges after Brexit.

VAT charges, customs duties, import fees and charges for returning items may be incurred depending on the products and circumstances.

Most of Amazon’s Irish customers use the .co.uk version of the website, as the company does not have an Irish store. The company has sent an email to customers who previously purchased on the website informing them of possible changes after the UK leaves the European Union on January 1.

“As you have placed an order on Amazon.co.uk and have selected a delivery address in the EU in the past, we wanted to inform you that as of January 1, 2021, when the Brexit transition period ends, you will see some changes when shopping on Amazon.co.uk and selecting an EU shipping address, “the email indicates.

Amazon said customers could be liable for VAT being owed in the delivery country or for packages being subject to duties, taxes and fees that may result in a price change at checkout.

Amazon has also issued a warning about returning items. They said they will continue to accept eligible returns for free if the reason for the return is the result of a mistake or if it is damaged. However, the cost of returning any merchandise for any other reason will be borne by the customer.

Other UK retailers selling and delivering to Irish customers are expected to impose similar changes.

Online retailers like Amazon have benefited from a large increase in online shopping as a result of global Covid restrictions. The Bank of Ireland released data last week showing that its customers’ debit card spending through Amazon in November nearly tripled compared to the same month last year.
