Almost 5,000 vaccinations for GPs and nurses

Almost 5,000 doses of the Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines for Covid-19 will be administered to GPs and their practice nurses today and tomorrow.

It anticipates the start of the community vaccination program for those over 70 on Monday.

Nearly 110 large GP practices will receive 12,000 doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine to be administered over the next week to people 85 and older.

HSE Executive Director Paul Reid described it as a milestone in the vaccination implementation program.

Today, 1,800 second doses of the Moderna vaccine will be administered to GPs at four vaccination centers in Dublin, Portlaoise, Galway and Sligo.

Tomorrow, 3,000 first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be administered at the same centers to GPs and nurse practitioners not vaccinated in the first round four weeks ago.

Starting Monday, 12,000 doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine will be delivered to those 85 and older at 108 large medical offices across the country for delivery as quickly as possible.

Later in the week, 8,400 doses of Moderna vaccine will also be delivered to GP’s offices, ahead of another 42,000 doses of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine during each of the next two weeks.

The goal is for everyone over the age of 85 to receive their first dose of vaccine within two to three weeks and for the 80- to 84-year-old to be vaccinated.

Ireland is still on track to receive at least 1.1 million doses of the various Covid-19 vaccines by the end of March.

In total, 79,500 doses of various vaccines will be administered next week, substantially more than in any week of the rollout campaign to date.

Apart from the 12,000 doses destined for those over 85 next week, 42,500 doses will go to residents and staff of nursing homes, and 25,000 doses to other healthcare workers.

Yesterday, the Health Department was notified of 23 more deaths related to the coronavirus and 921 new cases.

There were 894 confirmed Covid-19 patients being treated at the hospital at 8 p.m. last night, compared to 943 at the same time Thursday.

The number of patients with the virus in intensive care was 169, two more than the 167 on Thursday night.

St James’s Hospital in Dublin had the highest number of Covid-19 patients with 95, followed by Mater Hospital with 75, Connolly Hospital with 72, Tallaght Hospital with 58 and Beaumont with 56.

The hospital with the highest number of Covid-19 patients outside of Dublin was Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar, which had 55, followed by Cork University Hospital with 46.
