The number of people receiving unemployment pay for the Covid-19 pandemic has dropped by almost 10,000 to 209,941 over the last week.

The Ministry of Labor Affairs and Social Protection said that in the last seven days 9,974 people had closed their claim for payment.

It said 7,457 people would receive their final payment under the scheme on Tuesday.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys said on Monday that while the decline in the number of people receiving pandemic unemployment pay this week was welcome, “it is clear to all of us that Covid-19 is still active and may resurface in our communities. without prior notice”.

“As more companies prepare to reopen and schools and universities return, it is now more vital than ever that we take every possible precaution to protect ourselves, our families and our co-workers.”
