All Ulster GAA clubs must stop training from tomorrow

October 15, 2020

Club training is not allowed in Ulster counties.

Ulster GAA has confirmed tonight the cessation of club formation from the Under-16 level in all units in the province.

Last week, the GAA Steering Committee decided to suspend club matches at all levels with immediate effect, but training was still allowed. However, with the new coronavirus restrictions going into effect in Northern Ireland tomorrow and Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan will move to Level 4 under Ireland’s Plan to Live with Covid-19 starting at midnight tonight, all Ulster clubs should cease activity and only the ‘elite’ between counties. the level is allowed to continue.

Ulster GAA Chief Executive Officer Brian McAvoy said in a statement: “Following the announcements made yesterday about the measures that the NI Executive is introducing for the next four weeks and the subsequent decision by the Irish government to place Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan on Level 4 restrictions, I felt it was important to establish our understanding. of what it means for our units.

“Essentially all of our nine counties are now at a significantly higher level of restriction in an attempt by governments to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“With that in mind and with effect from Friday, October 16, all club activities, including training sessions that have been taking place since the Association’s board on Monday, October 5, 2020, should cease. for all GAA units in Ulster.

“The only activity that is exempt from this halt in both jurisdictions is elite activity between the counties.

“For the sake of clarity, this includes Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and Gaelic women’s football from U16 level to the level recognized by both governments.

“We appreciate that this is a difficult time for all citizens, including our members, but we ask everyone to continue to act responsibly and collectively to protect our communities and their health.

“This news will be a disappointment to our counties and clubs who have unfinished competitions and who may have been expecting a return to activity in the short term. We will continue to monitor the situation and update them on developments as they unfold in the next four weeks. taking into account the indicative dates of both governments.

“I would also like to remind all clubs of the following regulations that remain in effect during this time:

  • The club gyms remain closed.
  • GAA social clubs remain closed.

“These continue to be challenging times for all of us, yet we have demonstrated since the beginning of this pandemic our utter determination to work together for the common good at all times. I want to thank you all for your continued determination and understanding.”
