Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted that his team had “lost the plot” defensively when Aston Villa scored seven goals over the Premier League champions in a stunning 7-2 victory at Villa Park.
An Ollie Watkins hat-trick helped set the stage for the hosts, who also saw Jack Grealish (2), John McGinn and Ross Barkley enter the roster in the surprising result.
Klopp told Sky Sports that he was disappointed in Liverpool’s reaction after falling behind.
“All the things you should not do in a soccer game we did tonight,” he lamented.
“The first goal had an impact, but it shouldn’t. We got goals like that in the past, but the reaction wasn’t good and we lost the plot.”
Virgil van Dijk added that thoughts will be on preventing a similar performance from being repeated.
“It’s hard to lose the way we lost tonight. First of all, well done to Aston Villa, we have to give them the credit they deserve. It was one of those performances where we weren’t 100% from start to finish.” said the Liverpool defender.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith lavished praise on his players for rising to the occasion impressively against the reigning league champions.
“When Jurgen Klopp says wow to you, you know you’ve done something right,” he said.
“The guys were excellent, they executed the game plan perfectly.”
