Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson will be out for up to two weeks with a hamstring injury, Jurgen Klopp confirmed.

Alisson missed Liverpool’s Champions League game against Ajax on Tuesday, with Caoimhin Kelleher starting in goal ahead of Adrian.

“It is not Covid,” Klopp said. BT sport in his pre-game interview, when asked why Alisson was not at Liverpool.

“That is something we have to mention when it is not the case, and it is not the case. He told us after the game [against Brighton] felt his hamstring in the 60 or 70 minute.

“A small one, but enough for today and probably another week, we’ll have to wait and see. I’ve never heard of a hamstring that lasts only four or five days, so I think it will be 10-14 days.”

Alisson’s injury adds to Klopp’s long list of absentees as they continue to attempt to challenge both in Europe and the Premier League.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri remain unavailable, along with James Milner, who suffered a hamstring injury against Brighton on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara remain long-term injuries.

Despite Liverpool’s injury woes, Klopp lined up a strong side against Ajax, making just five changes from the one he drew at Brighton.

Joel Matip entered as central defender for teammate Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones returned in midfield, while Sadio Mane started in the three forwards alongside Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

However, it was the decision to hand 22-year-old goalkeeper Kelleher a Champions League debut ahead of established number two Adrian that drew attention, particularly with Sky Sports’ the expert Paul Merson.

On Kelleher’s departure, Merson said: “I think Alisson is the best in the world, he saves so many points.”

“You would be more comfortable if (Virgil) Van Dijk is playing. Good luck to the boy. 22 years old is young for a goalkeeper. It is a surprise that he is playing instead of Adrian. They must really like this boy.”

Kelleher was making just his fifth start for the club, the previous four having been in national cup competitions and the last one was in the FA Cup against Shrewsbury Town last season.
