A security alert at Dublin Port earlier this morning was lifted after a mortar launcher was brought into the country.

Gardaí sealed off the area after the launcher was discovered before the Army Bomb Disposal Team declared the weapon safe.

Gardaí believes that the firearm was being brought in for a collector in Northern Ireland, but they are in contact with the PSNI to verify this.

The driver has been arrested.

The discovery was made after a courier stopped on arrival at Dublin Port around 2 a.m.

When the car was searched, an 82mm mortar launcher was found in the rear.

The area was sealed off by ad hoc specialized units and the Army Bomb Disposal Team was called in.

The bomb disposal team confirmed that the weapon was a former Soviet mortar.

The area was declared safe around 5.30am and Gardaí has since removed the mortar for a technical examination.

The driver told gardaí that he was delivering the mortar to a collector in Northern Ireland.

She has been arrested and is being held at Store Street Garda Station.

Gardaí is in contact with the PSNI to establish whether an authorized firearms dealer ordered the weapon.

At this stage they do not believe that there has been criminal or subversive intent.

However, it is still a crime under firearms law to possess such a weapon.
