The head of HSE says the Covid-19 community’s positivity rate is 10%.

Paul Reid says contact tracing calls have more than tripled in recent weeks; now there are more than 30 thousand calls per week.

Mr. Reid warned of the “alarming” number of people being tested for Covid-19.

The number of close contacts per person is five people on average and 23,000 coronavirus tests are performed per day.

The first vaccines against Covid-19 will be administered on Wednesday.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says more vaccines are coming.

“We anticipate that the Moderna vaccine will be approved on January 6,” he said.

“That is not part of the current schedule that you will see in the newspapers today, so it will bring additionality already in the first half of January.

He added: “There seems to be a good chance that the AstraZeneca will be approved at the end of January and that is particularly important because we have booked a lot of them – more than we did for Pfizer.”
